What is a gas strut (gas spring)?
Gas struts also known as a gas spring, this dampens the force being exerted onto them allowing for a smooth and controlled motion, when they are released, the force is pushed back in the same way. This allows to lift or counterbalance the force to close or open a weight that can normally be found to be harder to moveor to keep closed without the extra assistance. They can be used for theautomative, furniture, marine, agriculture industries and endless possibilities.
How do gas struts work?
The gas struts are a cylindrical tube made of steel. That has three main components, first is the tube, secondly, it’s the rod and lastly, it’s the seal. They can be used with or without end fitting depending on the application that is needed.
The cylinder is filled with nitrogen which is an inert gas. This is an ideal gas to use as the molecules are far arranged further apart when not acted upon and can easily to be packed together under a force. This makes it suitable for compression and decompression.
The tube which contains a piston inside and when it comes under a load the nitrogen gas forces together compressing the piston downwards, the rod moves smoothy inwards. The opposite happens when the load is taken off the tube the rod extends, and the nitrogen fills the empty space pushing the rod back into its initial resting point.
The gas strut extends as there is a difference in the cross sectional area on opposite sides of the piston rod inside the struts.
This allows gas struts to provide smooth, consistent extension force without external power, making them ideal for lifting, supporting, and controlling motion.
Replacement
Using a gas strut for any application allow safe and efficient use as it can become easier to operate the application.

To ensure longevity of gas struts, it is recommended to do maintain routine checks on the gas struts for corrosion, leaks, noise and smooth function. These are key induction that the struts are failing or will fail caused by these. It’srecommended to store the gas struts rod down to protect the seals. Do not try dissembling the gas struts as they contain high pressure gas. If you need a gas strut that can be need reduce pressure, the adjustable force gas strut can be used as the pressure can be lowered with a 2mm Allen key to fit the specification needed.
Selecting the correct gas struts
The first measurement that you will need is the force rating from your original struts, that will be on the body of the struts (600N etc.). Then it you will need the measurements from the centre of one end fitting to the other end of the centre of the other end fitting.
