STRUNOX™ 316 – Fixed Force Stainless Steel Gas Struts: When do I need one?

Choosing a STRUNOX™ 316 Grade Stainless Steel Fixed Force Gas Struts are suitable when the force is known. The rating can be read from the body of the old one, in Newtons, for example 300N or when you are building a batch for the same application and the force has already been proven on the first unit. Fixed force struts are the most common choice, as they are used to directly replace exisitng struts with new and efficient ones.

STRUNOX™ 316 – Adjustable Force Stainless Steel Gas Struts: When do I need one?

A STRUNOX™ 316 Grade Adjustable Force Stainless Steel Gas Struts are supplied with a preset force of 700N, with a release valve fitted. This allows gas to be let out in small stages until the pressure that you require it to be.

Choose adjustable force gas struts for a new or one off application where the force is unknown, for a prototype, for a DIY made lid or hatch.

STRUNOX™ 316 – Adjustable Force Stainless Steel Gas Struts: How to release pressure?

With STRUNOX™ 316 Stainless Steel Adjustable Force Gas Strut, you might need to release some pressure from them to reach the force you need before operating the application.

Below are the steps to reduce the pressure in the gas struts:

  • First, you will need to fit the STRUNOX™ onto your application. Also, please make sure the strut is fitted tube side up when it is fully extended.
  • Then try to operate, if the STRUNOX™ gas strut are not closing at all, use a 2mm Allen key to release pressure on each strut for about a second at a time.
  • After doing this, attempt to close the application again. If they still feel stiff, repeat the process until you reach your desired force.
  • Only unscrew it until you hear gas releasing.
  • Please note that you must be very careful not to open the grub screw too much as it may result in too much gas being released along with making it extremely difficult to put the screw back on.

How do I find the correct pressure for my gas struts?

Normally the pressure of the gas strut is printed on the body of the strut followed by N (newton), E.g. 450N. If the marking has worn off, or you are building a new application, it is recommended using an adjustable force strut.

Understanding STRUNOX™ 316 Stainless Steel End Fittings: Eyelets, Ball Sockets, Ball Joints

All of our 316 Grade Stainless Steel End Fittings are made to the same corrosion resistant standard as the STRUNOX™ struts, so the fitting does not become the weak point in a statured or chemical environment. They are load rated and designed to be paired with our stainless mounting brackets.

316 Grade Stainless Steel End Fitting Types:

  • Stainless Steel – Eyelets: A circular hole through the centre of the end fitting, allowing the strut to be connected onto a bracket or secured with a bolt through the hole. A simple, very strong fixing where you do not need much angular movement.
  • Stainless Steel – Ball sockets: Designed to push onto an existing ball stud, allowing rotation on different axes. Useful where the lid twists slightly as it opens, and quick to remove for servicing. (Link Product)
  • Stainless Steel – Ball joints: A socket with a ball stud inserted inside, allowing free movement around that axis.

Stainless Steel Brackets and Mounting:

If you are using STRUNOX™ 316 Grade Stainless Steel Gas Struts, it is highly recommend using the stainless material for the brackets as well. This will allow cohesion between STRUNOX™ , End Fittings and Brackets. Each bracket will be used for various types of application. It is important that the brackets matches the dimension of the End Fitting.
